ROCK, FLAG, and EAGLE!

Jennie This is a scary thing for me to admit but I'm not really excited for any upcoming fall shows. I know. I KNOW. This is completely unlike me. I used to LOSE MY SHIT if my Entertainment Weekly had Mulder and/or Scully on the cover. I'd lose it times ten if they were on the cover together. I'd count down the days between The X-Files season finale and the next season's premiere. Especially if Mulder had died in the finale. Those summers were the WORST. And when (pre-Doggett) The X-Files went away, I replaced it with Alias. And when Alias went away, I replaced it with Lost. There might have been some overlap there, I don't remember, but whatever ANYWAY. I used to practically hyperventilate before Lost season premieres and when they were over, I'd shout, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" And maybe even, "WAAAAAAAAALT."

But Lost is over. And I have nothing to replace it. NOTHING. Unless you count watching reruns of Lost, which is a viable option, actually. I guess I'm supposed to replace it with The Event. I refuse to get my hopes up after the FlashForward debacle, but I'll probably check it out.

There are must see shows coming back of course. Shows like Chuck and Modern Family and 30 Rock. And there are shows that used to be must see for me that I'll probably still watch if I remember, like How I Met Your Mother and The Office. I know. I KNOW. I just put The Office in a non-must-see-TV category. WHO AM I? But aside from the JAM wedding/baby episodes, I don't remember all that much of last season. Maybe the upcoming season will be better since it'll be Steve Carell's send-off season. I don't know.

So, yeah, I'm not really excited about anything at the moment. Unless you count It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, but we're a season behind, so I'm talking about the season five DVDs, not even the new season. THAT'S CHEATING.

Maybe I'm forgetting something and you should tell me. Or maybe someone (ASHLEY) should just tell me what shows I'm not watching that I should be watching and I'll work on getting caught up on them.

I'll probably check it out. I really like some of the people in it. I'm just not getting my hopes up in case it's really stupid.

I'm not really excited for anything in particular to premiere either, Jennie. It's sort of sad, my lack of joy, because I LOVE television... maybe it's because I've been enjoying all of those USA series like White Collar, Covert Affairs, and Burn Notice so much that I forgot that "real" tv isn't on.

USA's summer lineup is stellar, MG! You're so right!

1. I used to keep a secret hoarded stash of magazine and newspaper clippings of everything to do with The X-Files. I kept it under my mattress. By the end of high school I had so many that my mattress was uneven. I have no idea why I did this.

2. There was a two year overlap with Alias and Lost. Alias ended in 2006. Lost started in 2004.

3. As for the new TV season, have you seen Community? That show really gets under your skin. And what about Fringe? I have a strange relationship with that show, but it's the one I'm most excited for. It just got really fucking awesome at the end of last season. It may not be able to replace Lost, but it's enough like it (and The X-Files) that it might make you feel better. Plus, Pacey. And crazy mad scientist played by John Noble. If you are interested in more detailed advice, email me. Otherwise this comment would be a page long.

4. OR here's a thought! Why don't you use all of this free time you will have in not watching TV to catch up on old TV, like say, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

I think Fringe is in the queue along with all the other shows we are catching up on. Or watching again, as is the case for Buffy and Angel. I forgot about Community. I think we started watching that more last season so we'll probably watch this season.

PS: I had a notebook where I kept all my XF clippings. We would have so been BFFs. As long as you were a shipper, anyway. Heh.

It's Always Sunny and Community are the only two fall shows I'm geared up for. I just realized that besides those two, none of my favorite TV even airs in the fall. Whaaat the F, networks?

Also, regarding XF: who wasn't a shipper? I mean, come on.

Oh, those people existed. I used to get in fights with them on AOL message boards. Heh.

Yeah, they called themselves Noromos (they really did, I'm not making this up), which I would like to helpfully point out is "so moron" backwards.

This comment thread was a treat!

1. What does "ROCK, FLAG, and EAGLE" mean? Someone please enlighten me!
2. I am often a "theoretical shipper" on a lot of things, meaning I might be fine with the idea of ship but not like the way it played out.
3. I am not watching any shows this fall because I don't have TV. Also, I actually have trouble committing to shows until they're over. I can't deal with drop in writing/production quality or sudden cancellation, both of which I experienced with Veronica Mars (!!!!), and I'm not going down that path again.
4. I started watching Lost on Hulu (right after it was over--see #3), and I get mixed reviews from friends who loved or hated it. I watched through about 10 episodes and am not sure what I think. So, all, please provide for me some compelling reasons why Lost would be worth my time to watch the entire series.
5. I enjoy TV but find it sad to watch alone, because movies and TV and plays and music and such things should be experienced communally--the sharing creates synergy and the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Kiti: I didn't LOVE Lost until Season Three, which is when the end game started to come into play. I would recommend sticking with it until at least the end of season three, and if you don't like it by then, you never will. And at least you'll know what people are talking about.

plus when you get to the series finale you'll cry and cry and cry. bonus?

Kiti said...

Ashley - Most people who hated it said they dropped Lost during Season 2 or 3. I guess those that weathered the low points were ones who saw the ultimate reward. [Moral in there somewhere?]
Kat - I'm not much a person who cries, so we'd see about that.

Anyone have info on "ROCK, FLAG, and EAGLE"? Is that a Lost reference (it could well be, after all)?

Also, any other suggestions for shows that I could watch in my ever-diminishing spare time?

Oh! Rock, Flag, and Eagle is from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is a fantastic show. It makes me LOL every time.
